New Highway will shorten Vallarta-Guadalajara commute

Whilst the project had a rocky start due to environmental groups’ opposition –they argued the construction would disturb the jaguar’s natural habitat– but SEMINAT assured that they are taking all the necessary precautions not to disturb any living habitats during this project. It’s estimated that a portion of the costs associated with this new highway may be covered by a private initiative, upwards of 70 million pesos.

The new route will include the following towns: Jala, Compostela and Las Varas; shortening the Puerto Vallarta-Guadalajara commute to just two and a half hours. Naturally, this faster travel route will facilitate Vallarta locals and tourist traveling by land alike.

The Department of Transport and Communications (SCT) is set begin preliminary construction to the Guadalajara-Vallarta highway as early as next year.

Bueno Richkarday, Vice President of SCT Infrastructure, confirmed SEMARNAT’s (Environment and Natural Resources Department) approval. Also noted, was the need to begin seeking out funds for the work entailed by next month, and begin construction in 2012.
